In ancient Israel, the firstborn sons were considered special and were initially set apart for service to God. However, God chose the tribe of Levi to serve in the tabernacle, taking the place of the firstborn sons of the other tribes. When the number of firstborn sons exceeded the number of Levites, a redemption price was required for the surplus. Moses collected this money as a way to symbolically redeem those who could not be directly represented by a Levite. This practice highlights the importance of every individual in God's community and His desire for all to be included in His service. It also reflects the broader biblical theme of redemption, where God provides a means for people to be brought back into a right relationship with Him. This act of redemption is a precursor to the ultimate redemption offered through Jesus Christ, emphasizing God's ongoing commitment to valuing and redeeming His people.
So Moses collected the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites.
