The Jewish leaders were keen to observe their religious laws, which prohibited leaving bodies exposed during the Sabbath. To comply with these laws, they requested that the legs of those crucified be broken, a method that would quickly lead to death by preventing the crucified from supporting themselves to breathe. This request to Pilate highlights the tension between maintaining religious traditions and the unfolding events of Jesus' crucifixion. It underscores the leaders' focus on ritual purity and adherence to the law, even as they were involved in the death of Jesus. This moment also sets the stage for the fulfillment of prophecies concerning Jesus' death and burial, as it led to His body being taken down and laid in a tomb before the Sabbath began.
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
